The Singapore Spirit indeed. 43 years ago, we were once a dependent nation, but 43 years on, we are here to day right here and now, as a cosmopolitan and modern city and society. We have really come a very long way from being a swamp village to one of Asia's most(if not the most) modern city state. Prosperous and safe, our little homeland is one chilli padi not to be messed around with. Yes, we might be a small country, yes we might have no natural resources at all, and yes we might not be the most influential country of all time, but we DO have the things which we are all familiar with - determination, perseverence, a stable economy, a secure nation, a peaceful society with so many different people from different backgrounds. All of whom come from all over the world to settle down here, a hotpot of different cultures and customs, and yet, we still find a way around all these different things and breach the gap between each individual.
I am watching the National Day performance right now, and I know it might sound extremely cliche, but everytime I see the flashbacks of Singapore's past and how much we have grown as a country, I can't help but feel this tingly sensation all over and a smile creeps up ever so slightly. It's times like these that we all hardly feel anymore, and I think such occasions should be experienced every single year. I can still remember 8 years ago when I was at the National Day parade, and that feeling has never faded at all. The full spectrum of senses hits you right in the face, from the loud roars of the jet engines of the Black Knights overhead, the sight of vivid bright colours of the performances, the ever-so-familiar taste of your favourite snack in the goodie-bag, the feel of perspiration all over from sitting down for over 5 hours straight, and the smell of excitment from every single person involved in the parade. All of these things, some comfortable and others not, add up to a spectacular experience at the parade. Even right at home, you can hear the planes roarring past your windows and the ever-so-familiar sound of the much-anticipated fireworks just stir you up and gets the patriotic mood going. Furthermore, those nostalgic songs we are all familiar with just keep coming back year after year after year, and now in remix versions as well. How can anybody not like the National Day Parade at all? Even the most un-patriotic person will find something interesting, hahahaha.
Yes, this post might sound extremely patriotic and all, but this is my country, and this is my homeland, and I just love it. My shout-out to all those who always make the Parade a wonderful one, and I guess it's something which will always be in our hearts.
